The Role

The main function of the role will be to provide analysis and process insights to Scotland’s largest grain distillery, white spirits, and bioenergy plant. Results of analysis will be interpreted to provide recommendations to optimise quality, efficiency and environmental compliance across the site.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Routine testing, sampling and analysis of raw materials, in-process materials, finished product and effluent.
  • Operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment, such as, HPLC’s, GC’s, pH meters and spectrophotometers.
  • Carry out basic microbiology testing in support of yeast performance where required.
  • Ensuring the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced, and that all instrumentation calibration is kept up to date.
  • Carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies in order to produce reliable and precise data to support process optimisation and compliance monitoring.
  • Recording and interpreting results to present to the operational teams.
  • Utilising a LIMS system to store results.
  • Engaging with operators and technical support to troubleshoot process problems.
  • Presenting recorded information in a suitable format including the preparation of graphs for trend analysis purposes.
  • Preparing samples for off-site analysis as required.
  • Adhering to and following site safety procedures and safety checks.
  • Ensuring that all work carried out complies in all respects with the requirements of the C.O.S.H.H. regulations.
  • Carrying out regular Legionella compliance monitoring activities.
  • Identify areas for quality control improvement
  • Evaluate data and draft reports, noting any relevant deviations from existing standards
  • Communicate quality or compliance concerns with urgency

KEY BEHAVIOURS:

  • Ability to work flexibly within a lab team to manage workload across all members.
  • Show an interest in learning about the distilling process and how lab analysis supports it.
  • Take an enthusiastic and proactive approach to required tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum – HNC/HND in Chemistry or other related science discipline.

KNOWLEDGE: 2 years practical laboratory experience. Use of chromatographic techniques (Gas Chromatography, HPLC & Ion chromatography). An understanding of distilling or brewing processes.
